DK-CH201 setup fail

By kangusaaesus , 18 February 2022

I have tried three times to get this DK-CH201 $200 'kit' to work, it doesn't:
Download and follow AN-000155-SonicLink-Software-Quick-Start-Guide-rev1.0.pdf

Install SmartSonic_1.11.6_installer which installs SonicLink 1.11.6

Plug DK-CH201 into my computer with two UB cables

Launch SonicLink and Connect -> show FW Version 1.11.7

Configure Sensors and setup the CH201 on the DK-CH201

Click Done

and in the Sensors window where is nothing, without anything there I cannot do anything.

Why isn't there one file with everything needed to run the DK-CH201?
Why Download an *.exe that runs and extracts a ZIP file?

Downloading an unsigned EXE file sucks, the Browser Freaked requiring many clicks to confirm I really trusted the file and running an unsigned EXE file freaked Windows 11, finally having to extract the files from the ZIP creating my third directory and the massive confusion.

I understand the Microchip Studio install (Your site has a 5-year-old video of installing Atmel Studio) but it took three tries to get the right software, I ended up with SmartMotion installed before I figured it out. Now that I started over for the third time I almost got it working but examples, PDF files, source code that don't match directions in the PDf files are confusing to say the least.

The last issue was having an account at TDK but having to setup a new account for this forum just to find out once the account is created you can't login with Firefox, Edge seems to work.

I couldn't find a means to edit my earlier post:
After several attempts to install 'SonicLink' on different hardware and Windows Version I found the issue was selecting a sensor: On the sensor daughter board there is 4 connectors, one on each corner of the board for external sensors with one sensor in the center of the board. The four connectors are labeled 0 ~ 3 J6 ~ J9 - the sensor in the center is labeled U1(it is really U15 but the horn covers the 5). On the daughter board there is a J6 and U15 label next to the edge of the PCB and in the SmartSonic User Manual it is called out as 'On-board sensor select switch between U15 and Sensor 0 (J6) (this is covered in the manual on page 9, it shows the center sensor as sensor 0, two pages after setting up and clicking done!), I thought they wanted you to JUMPER the two feed thru together but nope, on the bottom of the board is a switch, when the switch is pushed towards U15 label the sensor in the center of the board is active and (this is the biggie) can use the TX-RX on sensor 0 to configure the sensor (Covered in the manual on page 7 but I wasn't using sensor 0 so why configure it), when Done is clicked the now configured sensor can be access.
Move the switch to the J6 position and an external sensor connected to J6 connector works.
I have external sensors and I have Flex cables, but the manual doesn't talk about which side goes up or down on each connector, again in the manual it shows (photos) the flex cable conductor side up (new to flex, they seem to only have one conductor side) into each connector. Flex cable conductor side up, that wasn't that hard to type, why didn't the manual have that? The procedure to install an external sensor has several steps that must be done in sequence or the software freezes, don't delete the configuration files in the data directory or you will have to reinstall SonicLink.
I can see hours of fun figuring out the terminology and settings in order to do what is needed for my project, height of moving water over a 450mm range. Sensor height 1000mm highest water level at 457mm, should be a cake walk. It appears I have to read the complete manual before doing anything, they are not in sequence, since there are many PDF files I'll put the DK-CH201 away for now.
