IAM-20380 power consumption

By petrihaavistos… , 27 January 2023

Hi,

We are using the IAM-20380 gyroscope in a small low power device and I am trying to optimize power consumption. In some cases the sleep mode is too slow to react and I need to use the next best thing, but I am not sure what it is.
My assumption is the standby-mode (Power mgmt 1 register 107, bit 4). But there seems to be no information about the power consumption of that mode in the data sheet. Table 2 of the data sheet lists power consumptions, but not for standby.

What power/current consumption should I expect to get with the standby-mode? My own measurements indicate clearly more than 1 mA, but can it really be so high?

Hi Petri,
thanks for your inquiry and your interest in our products. Apologize for the very late response and I hope it's going to be still useful.

Back to your question. Gyro standby mode allows a quick recovery of gyro functionality by keeping gyro drive and pll circuitry enabled; these blocks are those that account for the most of startup time and the consumption of the device: that's the reason why overall current consumption doesn't reduce much when in standby-mode.
Unfortunately, if sleep time reaction is too low for your needs, there's no other way to reduce power consumption.

Hope it helps.

Best regards,
Simone
