small issue reading from the Magnometer

so I've recently just got my mpu-9150 working and I can read data from the accelerometer and gyroscope perfectly, however I appear to be unable to read from the magnometer.

I've determined that I should be at the address 0x0C, and I sent 0x01 to the register 0x0A before reading anything. however all I am getting back are zeros.

what are the steps that I should be doing to read from the magnometer? I assume I must be missing one
